Hubby’s review: Superdimensional Fortress Macross (1982) anime series, YouTube

3 October 1982 was when the Japanese anime series SUPERDIMENSIONAL FORTRESS MACROSS premiered in Japan. It launched the popular Macross franchise that has been going strong till this day.

Here in Singapore I couldn’t find it on any of the major streaming platforms so I had to rely on YouTube

This was the third Macross production I was exposed to, having first watched Do You Remember Love, and then Macross Plus before watching this in both its original Japanese and it’s Robotech adaptation.

My honest opinion is that I found it a little slow at times and needlessly melodramatic. There were times it felt like a Shojo romance anime with transforming mecha thrown in. Maybe it’s different cultural things but what visually looks like just a heated conversation would sound like the most tragic breakup argument committed to audio. Sure to the native speaker maybe that’s normal or even emotional but I just found it over done at times. And I for the life of me still cannot stomach the whole thing with Maximillian and Milla. It’s like the most airy fairy tale romance combined with the wtf-ness of a Korean drama surprise pairing before Korean dramas were a thing. He just finds her “kawaii” and then poof marriage and then poof baby. What?

What I did like was the main character of Hikaru, Minmay and of course the mecha. Hikaru and Minmay exist on this roller coaster of idealism and realism. Both start out with rather idealistic views of the entire situation and along they way both are forced to grow up, veer into the cynical side of things before finally finding their place on that sliding scale and their place in the greater scheme of things. Their respective journeys are what keeps me watching. Oh almost forgot about the mecha. A nice combination of beautiful form without sacrificing function, elegant but deadly. And definitely mecha that I am more than happy to own as toys.
