Magilumiere Magical Girls inc (Prime Video) 2025 - Season 1

In a world where being a Magical Girl is a legitimate career path, one spunky young lady is about to plunge head first into this fascinating yet oddly familiar industry. Enter fresh graduate Kana Sakuragi.

Not much in the way of work experience but decently book smart, able to memorise instruction manuals the same way she memorise books for school. After Kana helps magical girl Hitomi Koshigaya during a “Kaii” monster attack, she is hired by Hitomi’s employer Magilumiere Magical Girls Inc.

What captivated me about this anime is its portrayal of the world and the magical girl profession. This isn’t just a copy of the “corporatised super hero” trope but truly feels like a functional industry complete with the ups and downs of working life. You have the big MNCs down to the smaller startups, of which Magilumiere is the latter.

You have a whole slew of side industries who make durable but comfortable fabrics for costumes, anti Kaii monster technology that the magical girls use, a thriving R&D sector to create new spells etc.

Magical girls here are less like Sailormoon and more like a combination firefighter, pest exterminator and customer service only wearing fancy costumes. There is maintenance to do, paperwork to file, and monthly profits to tally. Theres meetings to attend, industry conventions, cross company collaborations, inspections to conduct. And after work you hang out for dinner or have another appointment unless it’s for the monthly get-together karaoke and drinks.

The show is great in how relatable it is. Kana meets all kinds of fellow magical girls; some do it for the thrill like Hitomi, to others it’s like any other job to put food on the table, yet others see it as a higher calling to inspire hope in people. Just like in the real workforce of today.

Kana herself is a really lovable character who goes from dorky newbie to confident colleague under the mentorship of the fiery Hitomi. Between Hitomi’s gung ho style and Kana’s quick thinking and fresh perspective, they make an excellent team. There’s also the Magilumiere support staff: Kazuo the introverted geek engineer, Midorikawa the marketing and accounts rep, and the boss Shigemoto. As this is mostly Kana’s tale we get only a little insight into the supporting casts backstories with only Kazuo getting a feature episode to shine.

This first season is mostly about showing how the world operates and how even a job like a magical girl’s can be just like any other job. While some may criticise the show for a lack of any overarching conflict or big villain, this is actually one of the reason I like it so much. It is more slice of life than traditional fantasy action genre

The season does conclude with seeds planted for a greater scope conflict down the road so we will see how things turn out. Meanwhile I look forward to more on-the-job hijinks with young Kana Sakuragi at Magilumiere Magical Girls inc.
